You’re Gonna Miss This

Their birth. Their first crawl. Their first walk. Their first day of school. Their first tooth that they lost.

The moments become memories in a blink of an eye. It happens so fast we don’t really understand what is going on when it’s happening. We take it for granted thinking it’ll always be this way.

In the back of our minds, we know it doesn’t last.

But that isn’t just for our kids growing up.

That’s for the trip we want to take but are “waiting until retirement” to go on it.
That’s for the girl we want to ask out but are too embarrassed because her friends are around.
That’s for the business we want to start but are scared of what our friends might think.

We don’t know when we are going to get this moment again, if ever. We think that life is so long and that we have it so planned out. If we are being real with ourselves, we know we don’t have the slightest idea what tomorrow will bring.

Why isn’t today good enough to try something? Why can’t today be that day we take a chance on ourselves and see what we have inside? Why can’t today be the day we decide to live just for today and forget about tomorrow?

Because eventually today will be gone, and so will tomorrow, and then the next day.

And if we don’t stop and think about what’s happening, we might just miss it going by.

So stoked to launch episode 44 of the Podcast as it features Adam Martin, a talented graphic designer and host of the Makers of Sport Podcast. I met Adam for the first time in 2015 at the Major Level Creative (MLC) Connect Design Conference and we got into a deep conversation about Podcasting and it lit a fire under me that pushed me to creating this Podcast. Adam is a talented graphic designer and has run a successful design firm for many years where we works closely with many folks in and out of the sports world.

I think you all will enjoy Adam and I’s dialogue throughout as we touch on a variety of topics around design, podcasting, exploring your passion and finding fulfillment, and so much more…

If you get a chance to listen I hope you enjoy!

About Adam Martin:

Hi, y’all. I’m Adam. I’m a designer, creative director and podcaster in Kentucky.

I founded the creative studio, Mtn. & Co., an independent brand and interactive design studio for the sports & entertainment business.

As principal & creative director, I design, develop business relationships and manage a team of trusted collaborators on art direction, visual design, typography, UX/UI, web development, photography, content creation, copywriting and more.

Sport—specifically its ability to influence culture and bridge generations—excites me. In fact, I created a podcast to capitalize on this excitement called Makers of Sport®, a show about design, creativity and makers in the sports business.

Throughout my 10+ year career, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many brands in sport or otherwise including IMG Worldwide, PGA Tour, Kansas City Chiefs, SLAM Magazine, 3d Lacrosse, Matt Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals), JMI Sports, the Texas Longhorns, the Michigan Wolverines, the Kentucky Wildcats, the Tennessee Volunteers, the NCAA, the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the John Wooden Award, Jim Beam Brands, Girl Scouts of America, Toyota, Scion, Raising Canes, Smashburger and many more.

I’ve been blessed to win awards from or be published in the American Advertising Federation (ADDYS), Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) magazine, PRINT magazine, College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA), UniWatch, SportTechie, Apple Podcasts, Adidas Group Blog and Product Hunt.

I enjoy speaking and have moderated panels, been interviewed on podcasts or given a few talks. Recent speaking engagements include: Major Level Creative Connect, AIGA Richmond, the University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Businessand College of Art & Visual Studies, the Lexington Chapter of the American Advertising Federation, and the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Kentucky.

Occasionally, I write stuff.

To connect with me you can follow me, view my work, read my articles, or see my resume. Also, feel free to email me to say hello or inquire about working together

In Episode 18, We speak with Stu Heinecke about his career in marketing, how he broke into being a cartoonist, and ways people can think about bringing value and setting themselves apart from the pack.  Stu has done some neat things throughout his career and figuring out a way to combine his passion for marketing along with his creative chops of being a Cartoonist led him to forging ahead with his own business and seeing success early on.

About Stu Heinecke

If ever there was someone born to write a book like How To Get A Meeting with Anyone, Stu Heinecke is that person.  A Wall Street Journal cartoonist, Hall of Fame-nominated marketer and author, Heinecke discovered the magic of “Contact Marketing” early in his career, when he launched a Contact Campaign to just two dozen Vice Presidents and Directors of Circulation at the big Manhattan-based magazine publishers.  That tiny $100 investment resulted in a 100% response rate, launched his enterprise and brought in millions of dollars worth of business.

The ability to connect with the people most important to realizing one’s goals ultimately became an obsession.  While Heinecke regularly employs his own cartoon-based contact methods, he became intensely interested in how others have solved this unique challenge.  As a result, he has uncovered a highly unique form of marketing that until now has had no name, yet it produces response rates as high as 100% and ROI figures in the tens, even hundreds of thousands of percent.  In How To Get A Meeting with Anyone, he not only gives Contact Marketing its name, but provides us with a definitive guide to what it is, how it works and has cataloged twenty categories of Contact Campaign types.

Heinecke is the host of Contact Marketing Radio, Founder and President of “Contact,” a Contact Marketing agency, and co-Founder of Cartoonists.org, a coalition of famed cartoonists dedicated to raising funds for charity, while raising the profile of the cartooning art form.  He lives on an island in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with his wife, Charlotte, and their dog, Bo.

As you’ll gather from our interview, Tisha has a tremendous personality and sense of humor and shares many stories of how she got into the game of golf, competing under pressure, advice to the younger athletes, and dancing…of course we discuss her dancing 🙂

In Episode 16 I get a chance to speak with a talented musician and America’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer recipient, Michael Ketterer.  I saw Michael’s performance on AGT and was extremely inspired by his story as well as his great voice. I reached out to him and he graciously accepted the invite.  Michael is a Pediatric Mental Health Nurse by trade and has been involved in music since his father exposed him to it when he was very young.

Michael and I speak about his childhood and how his father got him into music, his family as a great support system, getting a chance to be interviewed by Mario Lopez and of course we get some of his insight surrounding his life changing performance on America’s Got Talent.  Here is the link to that performance if you haven’t seen it – Michael Ketterer on America’s Got Talent

Episode 15 features Michael Bosstick, CEO of Dear Media, a Podcast network primarily focused around female hosts and talent, and he is the Co-Host of the Skinny Confidential Him and Her Podcast.  I was fortunate to interview his wife, Lauryn Evarts (@theskinnyconfidential) back in Episode 11 and really enjoyed getting a chance to speak with Michael in this episode and learning about his unique story.

Michael learned early on from his father that you have to work for what you want and after some early childhood jobs he figured out that he wanted to pave his own path and create opportunities for himself.  Early after college Michael ventured out to fill a gap he found in corporate aircrafts with a business called JetBeds and has now grown that over the last 10 years to be the most successful company in the space.

Michael is now extremely involved in digital media and finding new and creative ways to build an online brand.  We converse about many topics including business, the power of voice as a platform of the future, and many other intriguing insights.

I enjoyed one of Michael’s quotes where he says, “I spend 90% of my time focusing on solutions and 10% of the time looking at the problem”, and it’s no surprise he’s been successful with his optimistic mindset on business and how to scale effectively.

Episode 12 picks up right where we left off and I interview Chris David Garcia, the creator of the Major Level Creative CONNECT sports conference as well as the Creative Director for the Houston Astros.

I met Chris about 3 years ago and we have been friends ever since and I’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to join three MLC Connect Conferences in the past and look forward to the continued success of the conference as they hit the 5-year anniversary mark this June.  Chris is an extremely talented graphic designer but more than that is his personality and character which are phenomenal in the way he interacts and treats others.  He is a very selfless individual that is always looking for ways to help others become the best version of themselves and improve their own craft.

Furthermore, I feel Chris has been a disruptor in the creative world and his insightful ideas and passion for always bringing your best has led to the creation of probably the best conference I have ever been to. It’s intimate. It’s personal. It’s educational. It’s fun.  Top notch speakers surrounded by some of the most talented people in the sports design world.  It’s incredible!

Those reasons are exactly why I told Chris prior to launching the podcast that he has to be a guest as I knew he’d be able to bring the fire as well as some great stories.  He didn’t disappoint in this episode at all!

Episode 9 was a blast talking with Speaker and Author David Rendall. I met David for the first time in the spring of 2017 at the High Five Conference in Raleigh, NC where he was giving a keynote and he left an imprint on my life because I agreed so much with what he was speaking about. It was almost like he was speaking directly to me and some of his experiences actually helped guide me onto some of the things I am involved in today.

In this episode we discussed a variety of topics associated with valuing not only your strengths but also your weaknesses and pursuing adulthood with things that make you happy and are what you want to do vs what others think you should be doing. David explains his upbringing, dealing with tragedy, how an experience in college altered his life, practical advice on becoming a better speaker and much more.

Episode 5 features Raleigh Coaching Academy Founder Kathleen O’Grady. Kathleen has used a lot of experiences early in her life to fuel her coaching business and help transform the lives of the people she works with. Her Heart-based leadership coaching philosophy and passion around authenticity fuels her day-to-day work and she is truly a pleasure to speak with and learn from.

We cover the gamet of topics focusing around taking the leap of faith, personal transformation, career advice, and what’s up next for her business.

This episode is a perfect example of having belief in yourself and understanding the true nature of who you are as a person and then turning that into a thriving business to help others.

I think you all will enjoy this interview and learn a lot from Kathleen.

About Kathleen O’Grady

Before recognizing her calling to be a professional coach, Kathleen spent years wondering who she was and where she belonged. Like many, she looked to others to tell her… and was continuously misled and disappointed. When she started listening to her own inner authentic voice, it was music to her ears! Now she and her colleagues make a living helping others to listen to their own inner music. Coaching is not simply Kathleen’s profession, it is her life’s purpose. She was fortunate to have discovered this at a younger age than most, and is therefore inspired to help others find theirs.

As Authentic Leadership Coaches, Kathleen and her dynamic team act as catalysts for people to discover, rediscover, and embrace their unique genius. They always do their best to lead by example to show others that they can be whomever they choose to be, at any given moment. Raleigh Coaching stands for the belief that we all possess unlimited potential, and that it is our individual responsibility to do what we love and find ways to be financially rewarded in the process.

This episode is on fire with 5x world record holder and fitness expert Jordan Syatt. Jordan is incredibly knowledgeable about all things fitness and nutrition and brings so much great insight into this episode.

When you hear the passion in his voice it’ll bring a smile to your face!

We go deep into how he got started into personal training, his love for coaching, his insights into new years resolutions, and why he so desperately wants to be a wizard!

Jordan’s website is http://syattfitness.com and he can be found on Instagram a ton @syattfitness

Also make a couple mentions in this Podcast first about a great quote from Sly Stallone.  If you don’t know anything about the struggles to get the first Rocky made go hear and read up on it because it’s an incredible story –

Additionally, I’ve always lived by the quote “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” and I heard that first spoken from the late great Steve Jobs in his Stanford Commencement speech.  One of the best ever – Check it out here – Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement Speech – He got that quote from Stewart Brand’s last issue of the Whole Earth Catalog.  Well, Stewart recently did a podcast interview with Tim Ferriss that I highly recommend.  Crazy amount of life lessons and knowledge can be gained.

Check it out here – Tim Ferriss with Guest Stewart Brand

On Episode 3, I get to interview New York Times Best Selling Author and Founder of the Paleomg.com Blog, Juli Bauer Roth. Juli started her blog on a whim in 2011 and has turned that opportunity into hundreds upon hundreds of recipes online, 3 Cookbooks, extended that into Fashion and Fitness, and has a massive following (and growing) online.

She has a great personality and sense of humor and we touch on a variety of topics about being who you are, putting in the hard work, and balancing life.

Juli can be found all over online like Instagram @Paleomg and everything funnels back to her website where it all began, http://www.paleomg.com

About Juli

Why hello. I’m Juli and I am food obsessed.

I take food infatuation to a whole new level. I hate how obsessed I am with food. Not really.

I eat paleo. If you did not notice from the blog name, well, that’s understandable. It’s not Pale Omg, like the skin color. I’m usually pretty tan. I love spray tans. It’s actually pronounced pay-lee-o.m.g. There ya go, you did it! I just love food. I even eat some gluten free stuff. Don’t freak out though. I just REALLY love food. Especially food that makes me feel good. Are you pickin’ up what I’m throwin’ down? Good.

I write this blog for you from Denver, CO. I hate hiking and outdoor sports. And I don’t drive a Subaru, but I swear I am a native. I like CrossFit. Ok love. It’s pretty much the best thing that’s ever happened to me. When I’m not blogging or writing cookbooks, I’m working out.
